Pemra tariff not feasible, say cable operators

KARACHI:21,Nov The cable opera­tors have said that the tariff announced by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) was not feasi­ble.

Talking informally with the newsmen at an Iftar-eum-dinner hosted for them by Pemra, Sindh, here on Thursday office bearers of Cable Operators Association (COA) said that their members were not satisfied with the tariffs.

The City Naib Nazim, Tariq Hasan was the chief guest as
rep resentative of the City Government in the Council of Complaint Cell of Pemra.

The Pemra had introduced a tariff of Rs 1 per subscriber of cables per (local) channel per month and Rs 2 per foreign channel.

“There are two dealers of fojeign TV channels here who charge exorbitantly ranging up to Rs 50,000 per channel per month,” said chairman of Cable Operators Association (COA) Khalid Shaikh.

He said that the tariffs were enforced in November, but there was complete confusion among the 150 licenced members COA in the province.

An official of Pemra said that it was minimum tariff rate for the cable operators and they have to pay the tariff else penalty will be imposed on them.

Meanwhile, a meeting was Council of Complaint Cell was also held. It was held presided by Acting Director of Pemra Sindh, Tariq Aziz. The City Naib Nazim also attended the meeting which discussed and redressed the complaints of cable opera­tors.-APP
