ISLAMABAD: An important meeting of office bearers of Pemra Officers Welfare Association (POWA) was held on Tuesday to discuss the deteriorating situation of Pemra and resolved to save the organisation.

The strategy decided was to start a pen-down strike in the second week of December which will continue till the restoration of the sanctity and autonomous status of the organisation. A press release issued by POWA Secretary General Amjad Ali says that the POWA meeting was held in a local hotel and besides many other things also discussed the recent corruption scandals against the top office bearers of Pemra, published in the national dailies.

The office-bearers expressed their concern over the present situation. Frequent corruption cases, illegal recruitment, favouritism, nepotism and huge payments on account of court cases to a chosen legal firm instead of utilising the Authority’s own legal team were the main agenda items of Tuesday’s meeting called in emergency.

According to the POWA press release, other points that were discussed included purchase of 26 vehicles by the incumbent management despite a ban by the federal government, conversion of cable TV licenses categories from rural to urban in violation of orders of the High Court, appointment of staff on deputation despite the Islamabad High Court’s stay order to this effect and change of management in various CTV, FM, Landing Right Permissions and Satellite TV Licenses.

The office bearers decided to call a general body meeting of the POWA in the second week of December in order to evolve a strategy, including a pen down strike, to restore the sanctity and autonomous status of the organization. The officers also decided to see the federal information minister and secretary information apprise them of the prevalent situation in the Pemra on Wednesday.
