PEMRA notice: Channel 92 fined for defamatory report

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) imposed a fine of half a million rupees on a private television channel for airing false accusations about the NAB chairman.

According to a statement issued by the media watchdog, the fine has been imposed on Channel 92 with reference to its current affairs programme Muqabil.

The accusation included retirement against the rules from armed forces and induction into civil services were illegally levelled by the anchor persons of the programme.

Pemra had asked Channel 92 to provide proof of its accusations against the chairman. After failing to provide the evidence, Pemra declared the channel guilty of airing false news against NAB. The media regulator has also asked the channel to air an unconditional apology or its licence will be suspended.
