PEMRA discusses proposed changes

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority in a meeting May 8 considered proposed amendments to the Pemra Ordinance 2002 to the existing cross media restrictions and its relaxation.

It considered proposals for making the ordinance more effective for ensuring fair competition and a level playing field for all media players. It was felt the authority’s enforcement mechanism needed to be streamlined to safeguard interests of all players. It was considered necessary to consult the stakeholders on the proposals to provide for any constructive suggestions before making final recommendations for amending the ordinance and rules.

The authority felt it was necessary to elicit the viewpoint of the owners of media houses affected by the proposed amendments in the existing provisions. It decided that after consultations with stakeholders it would convene its next meeting to finalize recommendations on the proposed amendments.

It examined proposals on policy guidelines on advertisement and decided to hold public consultations and a public forum on advertisement policy guidelines, where representatives of Pakistan Advertising Association and other media outlets would present their views.
