PEMRA directs FM radios to observe mandate

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Monday in an exclusive meeting with the holders of non-commercial FM radio licences explicitly directed them to adhere to the scope and mandate of their respective FM radios.

PEMRA has so far issued 28 non-commercial FM radio licences across the country mostly to academic institutions offering Mass Communication. Non-commercial FM radio licences have also been given to the Islamabad traffic police, Punjab traffic police, NHA and the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, among others, to impart knowledge and help create awareness among the masses on their respective subjects. However, lately there have been increasing complaints that some non-commercial radios were reportedly airing foreign music, entertainment or news, which is not within the scope of their licence.

PEMRA Chairman Dr Abdul Jabbar categorically asked them to operate within the defined ambit of their license, failing which PEMRA would revoke the licence.

The PEMRA licensing director general, director general operations, general manager technical and assistant general managers were also present in the meeting.
