Pearl still alive, hopes Home Secretary

Sindh Home Secretary Brig (Retd) Mukhtar Sheikh has said he believes that American journalist Daniel Pearl is still alive and hopes that they will succeed in rescuing him soon.

In an interview with the BBCon Wednesday, Brig Mukhtar said the investigation is under way to find clue to whereabouts of the missing Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, adding prime suspect in the abduction incident Omar Sheikh has been arrested and is being questioned.

To a question, he said that he has no knowledge of whereabouts of Pearl, adding the arrest of Omar is in itself a progress and the experts are questioning him (Omar) which will help move forward the investigation to rescue the American journalist.

“As the investigation process is under way, we cannot disclose anything in the midway in this regard because this will affect the investigation,” he stated.

The Sindh Home Secretary expressed his ignorance that two former officials of the ISI have been taken into custody in this regard.

Asked whether any arrests have been made on the information of detained Omar Sheikh, he replied, “As the questioning continues, the process moves ahead,” saying some people have been detained.

To another question, he said Omar will certainly be produced in court.

To yet another question, he said he hopes the inquiry will soon reach its conclusion and they will succeed in recovering Danny.
