Pearl kidnapping e-mailer suffering from hepatitis

KARACHI- Salman Saquib, who confessed to helping send e-mails regarding slain US reporter Daniel Pearl’s captivity, is suffering from hepatitis C and his condition has deteriorated in a prison hospital, his lawyer Khawaja Naveed informed on Tuesday.

“I met him in the hospital on Friday and he had asked for better medical treatment otherwise he may die,” he said. “Saquib may not be able to appear in the court because of his deteriorating condition and I will move the court for shifting him to a better hospital,” he added.

Police said Saquib was also suffering from a bullet wound he received while fighting either on behalf of the Taliban in Afghanistan or against Indian troops in Kashmir. A magistrate had authorized medical treatment for Saquib on March 1.

The e-mails Saquib sent had threatened to kill Pearl unless a number of demands were met, including release of Pakistanis detained by the US during military operations in Afghanistan. The confessed mastermind of Pearl’s kidnapping Sheikh Omar is in police remand until Friday. “We may submit charge-sheet against Omar,” said a senior police investigator working on the case. A US grand jury indicted Omar for Pearl’s kidnapping and murder and abduction of an American in India the 1994, and demanded Pakistan to turn him over to US authorities.
