Pearl case: counsel allowed to meet clients in jail

KARACHI- Justice Shabbir Ahmad of Sindh High Court (SHC), in his capacity as the Administrator Judge of ATCs, allowed Khwaja Naveed Ahmad advocate to meet his clients Fahad Nasim and Syed Salman Saqib inside jail. The accused, who are involved in the abduction and subsequent murder of Wall Street Journal’s reporter Daniel Pearl, are in judicial custody and are lodged in Central Prison Karachi.

They will be produced before Justice Shabbir Ahmad on Tuesday. Accused Fahad Nasim and Salman Saqib are booked in a First Information Report (FIR) No 24/2002, registered with Artillery Maidan Police Station. They were remanded to judicial custody by a judicial magistrate after they recorded their confessional statement under Section 164 Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

It was submitted by their counsel Khwaja Naveed Ahmad that he wanted to meet his clients for seeking instructions and preparing defence in this case. The court allowed his request. It is pertinent to mention that the accused had admitted to have remained involved in sending e-mail messages to media organisations. These e-mails contained Daniel Pearl’s pictures in captivity. They had also confessed that they sent two e-mails on the directives of Ahmad Omar Saeed Shaikh, the prime suspect in this case.

Daniel went missing after he alighted from a cab in front of Village restaurant in Karachi. His captors later made a number of demands through e-mail messages. Meanwhile, police remand period of the main accused Omar and co- accused Adil will expire on Tuesday.
