Pakistani magazine receives US award

KARACHI- The US Consul General in Karachi, John K. Bauman, presented the Genesis Award Commendation Plaque 2001 on behalf of the Ark Trust USA to Syed Jawed Iqbal, Editor-in-Chief of the Southasia magazine, a leading monthly on South Asian current affairs.

The Ark Trust is an American non-profit organisation based in Los Angeles that has created the Genesis Awards to recognise and reward the media for producing works that raise public awareness of animal rights issues.

It is worth noting that the 17-member jury voted unanimously in favour of the Southasia magazine. The 2001 Awards Ceremony, a nationally televised black tie affair, was held in Beverly Hills California and was attended by over 800 individuals from the entertainment, journalism and business communities.

The board of directors of the Ark Trust includes such prominent showbiz personalities as Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Linda Blair, Lynn Redgrave and Alicia Silverstone.

Ark Trust President Gretchen Wyler asked Consul General Bauman to make a formal presentation of the Commendation Plaque in Karachi as Southasia Editor-in-Chief Syed Jawed Iqbal had been unable to attend the gala awards banquet in March.

Speaking on the occasion, Bauman commended Southasia for the November 2001 feature on animal rights that earned the magazine international recognition.

Upon receiving the award, Syed Jawed Iqbal stated, “Southasia will continue to highlight and analyse all important issues that affect the region.”
