Pakistan, Laos to exchange radio, TV programmes

VIENTIANE, Laos : April 23 (PNS) – Pakistan and Laos Thursday agreed to exchange
radio/television programmes and personnel to encourage greater media
interaction. The decisions came at a meeting between Information Minister Sheikh
Rashid Ahmed with his Lao counterpart Phanhduangchith Vongsa here at the
Ministry of Information.

Sheikh Rashid informed his counterpart about the significant progress Pakistan
has made in this area and said there was a tough competition between the
government and private sector in the electronic media. He said the government
has a liberal policy and has issued licenses to 55 private FM channels. He said
apart from the six government television channels licenses for another 30 have
also been issued.

The Minister said 1200 cable operators were also providing a multitude of
channels throughout the country. He said PTV covers 90 per cent of Pakistan and
its transmission caters to different tastes, providing news, information and
entertainment to the people. He invited the minister to visit Pakistan and
offered training to the engineers from the Lao radio and television.

The Lao information minister said they could use Pakistan’s assistance in
getting their personnel trained and said they were in dire need of trained
engineers. He said he was also willing to have programmes from PTV including
dramas and documentaries. Sheikh Rashid is accompanying Prime Minister Mir
Zafarullah Khan Jamali on a four nation tour of South East Asian countries.
