Pakistan and China call for fair, unbiased news coverage

BEIJING- Pakistan and China have agreed to develop interaction and co-operation at the levels of print and electronic media for promoting unbiased and fair news coverage of the international events.

An understanding to this effect was arrived at the meetings held among the heads of information departments and the visiting Pakistani official media delegation.

During the meetings with the Chinese Vice-Minister, State Administration of Radio, Film and TV, Tian Jin, and Vice-Minister, Information Office of the State Council, Li Gang, the two sides reviewed the existing bilateral media co-operation agreement.

The Foreign Office spokesman Aziz Ahmed Khan led the Pakistan’s side, which included Noor Saghir Khan, Director-General, External Publicity; Ashfaq Ahmed Gondal, Managing Director, Associated Press of Pakistan; Akram Shaheedi, Principal Information Officer, and Syed Iqbal Hussain, Director General, Cyber Wing, Ministry of Information.

It was agreed that their media institutions would enhance their interaction and co-operation for presenting the news relating to the bilateral, regional and international matters in their true perspective.

The two sides agreed for co-production of television programme, including documentaries and plays, for further promoting the existing goodwill and people-to-people contacts.

They hoped that China Central Television and the Pakistan Television would co-operate in training of their professional staff.

They agreed that the media of the two countries could play an important role in promoting comprehensive partnership in all areas of bilateral interest.

During the meeting with the Minister for State Council for Information, Zhang Qi Zeng, the two sides underlined the importance of increasing flow of information, promoting an efficient communication system and encouraging maximum exchange of media delegations.

The two sides will help each other for developing computer Internet and website systems for better utilisation of the availed information.

At their meeting with Chen Min Yi, Vice-President of the CR1, it was decided that they would take steps for improving the voice quality and reception of their radio programmes.

They will consider setting up strong news boosters at appropriate places for improving signal-receiving system. Chen said that the CRI was also considering increasing its Urdu service from 30 to 60 minutes daily, keeping in view its growing popularity in Pakistan.

The delegation also visited the office of Xinhua and held discussion with its Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Liu Jiang.

The Managing Director, APP, Ashfaq Gondal, briefed him about the working of the news agency.

They agreed that the two sides would take necessary steps to further strengthen their existing co-operation and news exchange programme.

They said the media co-operation of the two countries could be helpful for promoting unbiased and fair coverage of various events taking place in the region.
