PAC concerned over PTA’s performance

ISLAMABAD: Expressing concern over the performance of Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA), the Monitoring and Implementation Committee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has ordered special audit of the authority.

PTA Chairman Muhammad Yasin briefed the PAC body about the PTA Board on Monday. The convenor of the PAC body, MNA Yasmeen Rehman chaired the meeting.

The Committee was informed that the Member Technical and Finance, who was the chairman of PTA Board, was under suspension because of an ongoing inquiry against him. On this the Committee opined that since the board’s constitution was incomplete, the decisions taken by it would be null and void.

Yasmin Rehman said that if the board’s issue was resolved, the Committee may recommend its restructuring. The audit officials informed the Committee that the PTA had not issued any notice to the defaulters from 2005 till last year.

It issued all notices for recovery in 2010. They also informed the Committee that Rs44 billion were payable to the PTA by the telecom companies.

The PTA Chairman told the Committee that Insta Phone owed Rs21 billion to authority but the audit officials said that the PTA filed recovery petition after 10 months even the decision of Supreme Court was in its favour.

The Committee directed the audit officials to have special audit of PTA’s affairs and submit the report to it. Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Haider Abbas Rizvi, Asia Nasir, officials of PTA and audit officials attended the meeting.
