Over 400 opposition party activists taken into custody

* 4 journalists also reportedly arrested

KARACHI: Police took over 400 lawyers and activists, including leaders, of different opposition parties during various raids conducted throughout the city after emergency was imposed. Furthermore, four journalists were also reported to have been taken into custody.

Police are still carrying out raids to arrest lawyers and opposition party members in the city.

The Saeedabad Police raided the homes of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leaders and activists and took Abdul Majeed, Raja Mansha and Khalil Ahmed into custody. Kareem Bux and Sabir Raza of Tehreek-e-Insaaf were also taken into custody.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leaders and activists who were taken into custody include Manzoor Malik and Abdul Malik (by the Mehmood Police), Fareed Khan and Abdul Ghaffar (Clifton Police), Faisal Yousuf and M. Faisal (Pakistan Bazaar Police), Nabi Khan, Ghulam Mohammad, Zahid Hassan and Ata Rab (Orangi Town Police), Shaukat, Farooq Engineer, Nasir Rajput, Khalid Chohan and Abdul Hameed (Nabi Bux Police), Yasin Mian, Sohail and Raesuddin (Super Market Police), Abdul Qayyum, Saeed Khalid, Sar Taj, Mohammad Ayaz and Zakir Shah (Mominabad Police), Javaid Barki (North Nazimabad Police) and Shafiq Azeem (Rizvia Police).

Tehreek-e-Insaaf leader Zubair Khan was also taken into custody by the Gulistan-e-Johar Police, Khushi Mohammad and Shehzad of the Sunni Tehreek (ST) were taken by the Peerabad Police and Javaid Iqbal of an NGO was taken by the Nazimabad Police.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazalur Rehman (JUI-F) activists who were taken into custody include Abdul Qayyum (Keamari Police), Maulana Saeedur Rehman and Maulana Khanzada (Hyderi Police) and Sadiq Ali (Baldia Police).

Saeedabad SHO Shakil Ahmed Sherwani said, “We took Zahid Rafiq Butt, a PML-N leader, and others into custody after being ordered to by high-up officials late Sunday night. Only Butt was released Monday, also after orders from high-up officials.”

Jamaat-e-Islami (Pakistan) Deputy Sectary Information Sarfaraz Ahmed claimed that the police raided the homes of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) leaders Nasarullah Shajee, Younus Barai, Mohammad Hussain Mehnti, Hameedullah Khan and others but they weren’t arrested because they were not home. Over 350 activists and supporters have been arrested by the police, he said. Ahmed also claimed that the telephone lines of Idara Noor-e-Haq have been cut off.

JUI-F Ameer Karachi Qari Mohammad Usman told Daily Times that dozens of JUI-F activists have been arrested by the police from all over Sindh, especially from Karachi. It was also reported that police raided the homes of some JUI-F leaders, he added. “Nobody can stop the MMA’s struggles by arresting their activists and leaders.”

Daily Times tried several times to contact police officials including Sindh Inspector General of Police Ziaul Hassan, CCPO Karachi Azhar Ali Farooqui and others but they were not available.
