Over 1,000 killed in a year: HRCP

KARACHI, August 03 2005: Some 1,138 people were murdered in Karachi, 26 were raped or sodomized, while 122 committed suicide during June 2004-05, says a report of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), Sindh.

Around 438 people, including 250 women, 146 men and 42 minors were sacrificed in the ‘name’ of Karo-Kari in Sindh. Out of 1,138 people murdered, 982 were men, 118 women and 38 minors.

Women topped the list of victimised people as 159 women were raped in Sindh, while 112 minors and 33 men were sodomized in the preceding year. All the 33 sodomy victims belonged to Sindh.

The report says, daughters, sisters and mothers in Karachi were not shown mercy, where 14 women were raped, yet ‘many’ remained safe as compared to the interior of Sindh where 145 went into life-long sufferings. Hundred minors were raped in interior Sindh and 12 in Karachi, it added.

In Sindh, 883 people committed suicide – 582 men, 294 women and 7 minors. Out of 294 women, 35 belonged to Karachi and the rest to the Interior. Men seemed to be in more stress and tension as 80 took their own lives in the metropolis and 502 committed suicide in interior Sindh, it said.Besides, seven minors committed suicide in Karachi during the last six months, the HRCP report said.
