Newborn girl found strangled

KARACHI: A newborn girl was found strangled at a garbage dump near a stormwater drain at Jadoon Chowk in Baloch Colony on Monday.

The area SHO, Inspector Rustum Khan Khattak, told Dawn that the body, wrapped in a piece of white cloth, was spotted by the residents who informed the police about it.

He said that the victim baby had been strangled with a piece of cloth that was found wrapped around her neck.

The SHO said that the body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for an autopsy and later a case (FIR 213/2009) was registered against unidentified culprits under Sections 302 (intentional murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on behalf of the state.

Subsequently, he said, the body was handed over to the Edhi Trust for ablution and burial.

Young woman falls to death

A 21-year-old woman was killed when she fell from the balcony of her 7th floor apartment in Block V of Clifton.

Witnesses told the Boat Basin police that the victim, Naila, daughter of Mohammed Riaz, was sitting on the parapet of her apartment’s balcony and having a cup of tea in the morning when she overbalanced and fell down. She died instantly, they said.

The victim was shifted to the JPMC where she was pronounced dead. The Boat Basin police said that no medico-legal formalities were initiated as it was a case of accidental death.

They said that the victim girl was living with her mother and three other siblings and her father, who had become estranged from her mother, was living somewhere else. The police said that the victim was engaged to be married shortly.
