Need to enhance police sensitivity towards human rights stressed

KARACHI: Police need to be more sensitive to human rights and ensure that they are not only protecting human rights of citizens but also not violating them, said Gulmina Bilal Ahmed, a resource person.

Speaking at a training workshop organised at a local hotel Friday by Shehri – CBE, a Karachi-based civil society organisation, she said that investigation officers and other police personnel need to avoid violation of human rights and adopt modern techniques like forensic examination.

Ahmed further said that this would help improve policing and people would look up to the force with respect. She asserted that senior police officers could play a cardinal role in protecting rights of the citizens by setting precedents for their junior officers to follow.

Khatib Ahmed, member Shehri said that when police use modern techniques during their investigation, it would improve policing culture and it would convert our policing system into a friendly and civilised force. He said that there was a dire need to train police personnel in this regard and educate them on human rights.

Justice (r) Majida Rizvi gave lecture to the participating police officers on women rights, and most common problems in terms of human rights violations against women. Justice (r) Shafi Muhammadi, father Abid Habib and Ghulam Madni Memon of SPARC also spoke at the workshop.

The training conducted by Shehri is part of the national project for participatory citizens-police interaction and training for improving policing of human rights violations and advocating police reforms. Officers of the Karachi Police attended the workshop and it was Module 2 and 3 of the said project.
