ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has so far distributed a total of Rs17.81 billion among 711,130 flood-affected households countrywide since Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani inaugurated Phase-II of the Citizen Damage Compensation Programme (CDCP) a few months ago.

“The government has not forgotten the flood-affected people and the damage compensation programme is in full swing in all provinces of the country,” said Nadra deputy Chairman Tariq Malik here on Saturday.

“The Cabinet Division (Emergency Relief Cell) is overseeing the project with Nadra being the lead technical execution agency in collaboration with the provincial disaster management authorities,” he said.

Giving details, the Nadra deputy chairman said that a total sum of Rs2.47 billion has been disbursed among 130,700 households in Sindh, Rs7 billion among 309,864 eligible beneficiaries in Punjab, Rs8.1 billion among 260,892 flood victims in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rs38.22 million among 2,798 households in Balochistan, Rs117.86 million among 3,231 households in Gilgit-Baltistan and a total amount of Rs8.054 million has been disbursed to 3,645 households in Azad Kashmir in the second phase of the programme using Watan Card cash disbursement instrument.

“The government responded swiftly to the relief operations after floods and decided to extend cash assistance to the flood-affected families through Watan Card to overcome the miseries and assist their economic recovery process,” he said. “The programme is still on and won’t be closed unless all affected households are compensated for damage as per criteria mutually agreed upon by all stakeholders,” he added.

Tariq Malik said the first phase of Watan Card was launched in September 2010, whereby the government provided an initial tranche of Rs20,000 to 1.74 million affected families as immediate relief. “Nadra played a key role in the success of the programme by developing a transparent programme design using modern technology and established 131 Watan Card Facilitation Centres throughout the affected districts through which cash disbursement of Rs34 billion to 1.74 million flood-affected families was made in the first phase,” he said.
