NA speaker cancels press cards

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain on Wednesday cancelled all press cards issued to journalists for their entry into the parliament house for the coverage of the current session of the assembly.Fresh passes for the coverage of the session will be issued later. Meanwhile, a number of journalists representing various national and regional newspapers have lodged a strong protest with the speaker over a ‘physical assault’ by their fellow professionals.In a letter, eight journalists narrated that they were sitting in the press gallery to cover the National Assembly’s budget session when the incident happened. They said, in the wake of the assembly proceeding’s boycott by media men and holding of negotiations with Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azim Khan and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Sher Afgan Niazi, a handful of journalists appeared and started thrashing them with fists and kicks.These hooligans also stopped them from performing their professional duties, they added. They created pandemonium in the press gallery and beat senior journalists Zulfiqar Ali, Chaudhry Qurban Hussain, Ghulam Farid Anjum, Naeem Qureshi and Rana Manzoor Hussain with blue and black, the letter added.They prayed to the speaker to form a parliamentary committee to probe the incident and take appropriate action against the responsible persons. The letter was signed by Mian Zulfiqar Ali, Qurban Hussain Chaudhry, Ghulam Farid Anjum, Naeem Qureshi, Rana Manzoor Hussain, Naveed Iqbal, Hafiz Mohammad Tahir and Mohammad Zaki Dogar.
