Munir Niazi remembered

LAHORE: Rich tributes were paid to poet Munir Niazi at a gathering at Alhamra Art Center on The Mall on Saturday.

The Punjab Council of Arts had arranged an evening to remember Niazi. Speaking on the occasion, people threw light on various aspects of Niazi’s life and poetry. Poet Saadullah Shah said Niazi’s poetry was pictorial, as he sketched life, people, places and emotions in his poetry.

Intellectual Hussain Majrooh said in Niazi’s time poets like Rashid, Faiz, Shakaib Jalali and Nasir Kazmi were enriching the poetry scene, but Niazi kept his individuality intact. He said Niazi and Majeed Amjad were the poets who became more popular after their death.

Amjad Islam Amjad held Niazi in high esteem.

Instrumentalists and singers also paid tribute to the poet. Guitarist Sajjad Taffu played Niazi’s famous Ghazal “Us Baywafa Ka Shehr Hai” and “Kaisay Kaisay Log Hamaray Dil Ko Jalanay Aa Jatay Hain”. Asif Javed, vocalist and student of legendary singer Mehdi Hassan, sung “Jis Nay Meray Dil Ko Dard Diya”. Singer Farah Anwar sung “In Say Nain Mila Ker Dekho”.

Niazi was one of the best-known and admired Urdu poets. He also produced poems in the Punjabi language. ‘Taiz hawa aur tanha phool’, ‘Jungle mein dhanak’, ‘Dushmanon kay darmiyan sham” and ‘Mah-i-Munir’ are some of his popular Urdu publications.
