MQM slams attacks on Geo, Jang as rallies held in two Sindh cities

KARACHI: The Coordination Committee of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has strongly condemned the attacks on the offices of Geo TV and Jang in interior Sindh.

In a statement issued on Friday, the committee deplored the manhandling of journalists and damage and destruction of property by certain elements in interior Sindh. The MQM Coordination Committee said that one could disagree with the reports and analyses appearing in certain sections of the press and media and one had the right to express one’s point of views but the attacks on the offices and manhandling of journalists could not be validated under any condition.

The committee said that the staff members of a private TV were also beaten in Karachi and their van was set on fire by armed assailants. Expressing complete solidarity with the journalists, the committee denounced the attacks on the press and media.

It said the attacks were aimed at restraining the freedom of the press and media. The committee also demanded swift action against the elements responsible for the attacks and called for providing security to the journalists.

Our correspondents add: Meanwhile, activists of some nationalist parties staged rallies against Geo and Jang in Sukkur and Garhi Yasin. The participants raised slogans against Geo and Jang, and also burnt a few copies of Jang.
