MQM referendum concludes

KARACHI: A weeklong exercise by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to seek public opinion through a referendum on evolving a national consensus to safeguard the country`s sovereignty and integrity following the May 2 operation in Abbotabad by US commandos concluded on Tuesday night.

The MQM arranged a visit by newsmen to various `referendum camps` set up in different areas of the city to show them people`s participation in the exercise.

After the visit, MQM leader Syed Mustafa Kamal said at a press briefing at the party headquarters on Tuesday evening that the results of the referendum would be announced in two or three days by MQM chief Altaf Hussain.He said that it was a gigantic task to count such a large number of forms filled by people.

The MQM coordination committee would apprise the masses of its future strategy after declaring the results, he added.

He said the referendum would provide a guideline to rulers and policymakers to review their domestic and foreign policies.

MQM leaders Wasey Jalil and Haider Abbas Rizvi were also present.
