MQM concerned over disappearance of reporter

Karachi: The Coordination Committee of the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) has expressed its concerns over the disappearance of senior journalist Malik Munawer.

In a statement, the Coordination Committee said that Munawer, a News 5 reporter, had left for work on Thursday and later gone missing. More than 24 hours had passed, and no contact could be established with him, it said.

The committee called the incident a flagrant example of suppression of freedom of the press and media.

It sympathised with the family members of Munawer and expressed solidarity with the journalist community.

The committee asked President Asif Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah, and Home Minister Manzoor Wasan to take notice of the disappearance of Munawer.

It called for immediate recovery of the reporter and provision of security to the journalists.

Munawer is the same reporter who had recently asked former home minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza some questions about the MQM at the Mardan House. Mirza had spoken out against the Urdu-speaking people in response to the questions, which led to violence in the city.
