Missing persons not in Sindh police custody: outgoing IGP

SUKKUR: Outgoing Inspector-General Police Sindh Jehangir Mirza has declared that nobody on the list of missing persons from Sindh is detained or under arrest of the police, adding that this information has also been conveyed to the Supreme Court through a clarification.

He admitted that due to the presence of some corrupt people in the ranks of police, the credibility of the Sindh police had been badly shaken and it needed to be restored.

The IGP who retired from the police service with effect from Friday (April 13) said this while addressing a “Police Darbar” in Sukkur on Friday.

In his farewell address, he recalled his long police service career in which he had tried his best to serve the people, remaining above personal or political considerations, while displaying hard work and honesty.

He underscored the need for unearthing black sheep from the cadres of police, and called for their ruthless accountability. He said his message to the senior police officers is that they should evolve an accountability process in their jurisdiction and cleanse the department of all corrupt elements for restoring people’s confidence.

He said that showing exemplary duty thousands of policemen have laid down their lives to protect the life and honour of the people. He deplored that this had not worked to build people’s confidence. “This is the reason that the gulf between the people and the police is widening with each passing day.” Regional Police Officer Sukkur Zafar Ahmed Farooqui also addressed the meeting.
