Minister serves notice on news agency

ISLAMABAD (June 17 2007): Minister for Information Technology, Awais Leghari on Saturday said a legal notice, under defamation law, has been served to a news agency which released a news item to some newspapers regarding his alleged involvement in Kafila Siddiqui case.

Speaking on a point of order in the National Assembly, he said, “I have claimed Rs 100 million as damages and given two-week time to the news agency.” Explaining the matter, he said Asian News Network (ANN) had released a news item about alleged relations between him and Kafila Siddiqui, which could be useful for investigations into her murder.

The news agency staff claimed that they got this news from web-site of BBC, he said. “When, we approached BBC Office here, they informed that such news does not exist on their web-site.” The Minister said later the news agency contradicted the news item and explained that they monitored it from a web-site and his name was mentioned inadvertently.

Awais Leghari said the opposition should not exploit if there was a false reporting of an issue. On a point of personal explanation, Khurshid Shah of PPPP said he does not believe in political point scoring and he raised the issue on the floor of the Assembly after the media asked him to comment on the news report.
