Millions on billboards

Millions of rupees are being spent on billboard advertising in the city to welcome Ms Benazir Bhutto later this month. A survey carried out showed that at least twenty billboards of varying sizes have been erected on main streets in different parts of the city.

Ms Bhutto is expected in the city on October 18 and political supporters have started paying for welcome boards in strategic parts of the city.

One observer said that most of the billboards are being placed in Clifton area, where Ms Bhutto resides. Some said that it is a attempt at cheap publicity aimed at gaining Ms Bhutto’s attention and a possible seat in the coming general elections.

A spokesman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) denied that any party funds were being used in the advertsiing.

Political observers, however, stated that such advertising is costly and the same money could have been used in more constructive work for the party or the people.
