Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed for promotion of e-learning in Pakistan

LAHORE- Virtual University (VU), United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) and G77 Trade Information Network (G77-TIN) signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for promotion of e-learning in Pakistan at a ceremony held on October 17, 2002.

G77-TIN, through its strategic alliance with Serebra Learning Corporation, has acquired rights to distribute a range of computer based training courses, courseware deployment systems and associated trade marks and trade names to provide high quality web based training at nominal cost to under privileged 133 developing countries of G77. The first e-learning portal of Pakistan, an initiative of WOL, was launched last month in collaboration with G77-TIN.

The Unido is carrying out multinational activities throughout the developing world for sustainable economic and industrial development, poverty alleviation, environmental protection and human resource development by promoting the transfer of technology-oriented to enhance the competitiveness of the productive sectors.

Dr Carlos Suarez Chanduvi, Country head of Unido Pakistan said that G77-TIN’s initiative for promotion of e-leaning was commendable and added that Serebra’s superior content, coupled with the flexibility of their packaging and the affordability and ease of use of their learning technology, will go a long way in developing skills of the workforce. This e-learning mechanism will provide affordable and flexible online computer based learning access for life long learning as well as professional career enhancement. “In this way, they will be able to broaden the spectrum of e-learning in developing countries,” he remarked.

Dr Naveed Malik, Rector, Virtual University, said the university will be able to deliver world class education not only in the big cities but also in small towns across the country. We will also formulate our courses and conduct online examination. He said that the university will be charging only 1,425 per course.

Asad Ullah Shah, Director, Strategic Alliances of G77-TIN and Sadaf Shah, Project Co-ordinator of Trade Information Network Asia/Pacific also spoke.
