Meeting to review Hudood Ordinance today(July 01)

SLAMABAD, July 01 2006: President General Pervez Musharraf will chair a meeting today to review the Hudood Ordinance in the backdrop of ongoing debate in the country and formulate the roadmap for future legislation to bring some changes in the law. Pakistan Muslim League President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Chairman Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Dr Khalid Masood, prominent religious scholars and senior officials of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights will attend the meeting.

Official sources hinted that the deliberation of the meeting would pave the way for the possible amendments to the Hudood Ordinance that was promulgated by General Ziaul Haq. It had become controversial when various circles described some of its clauses as discriminatory to women. A massive debate in the print and electronic media had already been going on and moderate view was that it should be repealed while the extremists viewed that it could not be changed or repealed.

Few days ago, the CII decided to amend ordinance and today’s meeting will also review recommendations of council’s legal committee, the ordinance and opinion of previous councils. According to official sources, the amendments would be recommended in true spirit of Holy Quran, Sunnah, relevant laws and constitution.
