Media urged to depict true picture of society

Karachi: A ceremony to distribute certificates among students, who had recently done a content analysis of the print and electronic media, was held at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal campus of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUSAST).

Chairman Department of Mass Communication Dr Tauseef Ahmad Khan, senior journalists Wusatullah Khan, Qaisar Mehmood, Vice-President of the Karachi Press Club Fazil Jameeli and others addressed the gathering on the occasion.

Students, in their research work, have pointed out the lack of self-accountability in the national press. The research had been conducted in association with the Mass Communications Department of the Urdu University and NGO ‘Auks’.

Speakers lauded the research report. In his speech, Wusatullah Khan said “media, particularly private TV channels, leave an impact upon the opinion of the masses and if they don’t present the facts and true picture that would have a negative impact”.

He added that whatsoever was being done by the anchorpersons of the channels was completely against the journalistic principals and ethics. Senor Journalist Qaisar Mehmood said TV channels were not representing the true picture of society and only sensationalism was being promoted to improve the rating of their channels.

Lauding the effort made by the students, Jameeli said the research has had great importance for the media owners and the journalists. What was needed, he said, was to make policies based upon the recommendations, keeping in view the results of the research.

Dr Tauseef Ahmad Khan said universities were being identified by their research work and we were proud of our department that was doing research work on latest topics. Media should go through the process of self- accountability and one must not present the personal view as news, he added. Chairperson, Auks, Tasneem Ahmad also spoke.
