Media, opposition stage walkout in Punjab PA

LAHORE: OPPOSITION and journalists staged a walkout during Punjab Assembly proceeding on Friday to protest against the deputy medical officer of Mayo Hospital who tortured a woman reporter of a private TV channel filming a dengue patient and later registered a case against her.

The Punjab Assembly speaker adjourned the proceedings for one hour after media and opposition staged a walkout.

Journalists staged a boycott to protest against Deputy Medical Officer Dr Aleem who had physically tortured a reporter of a private TV channel filming a dengue patient after getting approval from Mayo Hospital medical officer. Dr Aleem allegedly tortured the reporter and registered a case against her on charges of interfering in official business.

Immediately after journalists staged a walkout, opposition benches spoke on the issue. Amina Ulfat of the PML-Q lambasted the provincial government for its policy of snubbing the voice of women.

She said the government had not given development funds to women legislators and it had also got published photographs of the Punjab governors daughter. She demanded the government take action against the doctor responsible for misbehaving with a reporter. The opposition then staged a walk out and joined journalists outside Punjab Assembly.
