Media failed to remain impartial, says Shujaat

ISLAMABAD: President of Muslim League Chaudhary Shjaat Hussain on Wednesday claimed that the media had failed to play its impartial role following the government’s concessions.

‘We observed that some media channels were busy in promoting,, confusion and uncertainty in the society,” he said, adding sensitive scenes were being shown to audiences by private, television channels.
He advised media organizers to keep the national interest supreme, in professional assignments.

Speaking in a PTV programme he refuted the claim of Benazir Bhutto that the government had made up its mind to defer the election for one year.

Chaudhary Shujaat said that most of the statements issued by Pakistan People’s Party Chairperson Benazir Bhutto were based on newspaper reports. He said Benazir Bhutto had been making frequents changes in her stance, adding, ‘I can’t comment on her rapidly changing statements’.

‘Prior to her return to the country, Benazir Bhutto had committed to work for the promotion of democracy and national reconciliation but her behaviour after coming back was somewhat different,’ he, said.

Shujaat made it clear the elections would be held on scheduled time and there should be no other opinion in this regard. He said that government had no intention to impose emergency but some developments and incidents, which took place in the near past, compelled to take the step.

He said the administration was rendered paralysed and terrorist incidents were occurring frequently. The citizens were aware of the developments taking place in the country and they were in a state of confusion, he said.

‘Had the situation prevailed, it would have proved dangerous for the country and its people,” He added. The PML-Q chief said as soon as the situation got normal, emergency would be lifted without any delay. —APP
