Media advertising agencies asked to have a code of ethics

ISLAMABAD, July 2 (APP): Media advertising agencies should sit together and evolve a tangible, acceptable and practical code of ethics to discourage the tide of misleading public ads, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azeem Khan said Monday.

He was addressing the participants of third Roundtable Conference on Advertising in Pakistan, organised by the Pakistan Observer.

He said owners of media and advertising agencies have the moral obligation to banish this trend.

“It is an apt time that people working in this sector should work out a code of ethics with consensus for the mutual benefits of the sector and the general public,” he added.

The minister said government does not interfere in the affairs of media advertising agencies but a good sense of national responsibility should prevail.

“It is heartburning to note certain ads in newspapers and Tv channels which aimed to mislead the general public by showing them rosy pictures about their fake products and schemes,” he added.

He said to keep a check on a large number of certain ads is impossible for the government, rather the responsibility lies with advertising organisations.

He said the government is ready to work as facilitator and want to make the process moving.

Tariq dispelled the rumours that government would take stringent or punitive actions against media organizations.

Tariq also censured the tendency of despondency and pessimism about country’s future and insisted that it should be cast away.

Editor-in-Chief of Pakistan Observer Zahid Malik, Additional Secretary Ministry of Information Fazalur Rehman Malik and a large number of media advertising agencies representatives were present on the occasion.
