Media’s role vital to conflict resolution

Islamabad: The role of media in the situation of militant insurgency is to be a catalyst in the process of conflict resolution through interpersonal mediation, said Prof. Dr Masrur Alam Khan, Head, Department of Mass Communication, NUST, here on Tuesday.

Dr Khan was presenting a paper on ‘Electronic Media and Interpersonal Discourse: Mediation in Crises’ under the aegis of NUST Business School on Tuesday.

NUST Director General/Dean of the Business School Prof. Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan presided over the session. The seminar focused on the implications of Heavy TV viewing in generating political efficacy through interpersonal discourse. A number of prominent figures from the news media industry and representatives of other universities attended the seminar.

Dr Masrur said that communication plays a critical role in either motivating people or making it possible and this study has confirmed that electronic media cultivates a dire need to use print media among people that took them into a discourse state of affairs in more conducive manner. Television provides national political information, which has impact of awareness about curial political issues and that is primarily used for that function, he added.

Electronic media play a central role in stimulating and enabling local political participation with significant implications for processes of democracy in the country, he added.
