MD PTV sacked, new chairman takes over

ISLAMABAD: The Managing Director of Pakistan Television, Yousuf Baig Mirza, was sacked on Saturday as known TV anchor Dr Shahid Masood took over as the new chairman of the corporation.

The Establishment Division on Saturday issued two letters, one terminating the contract of Mirza and the other giving additional charge of the MD to the new chairman of PTV.

Sources in the Establishment Division told The News that in Saturday’s meeting of Dr Shahid Masood with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, matters regarding the package of the newly-appointed chairman were discussed and finalised.

But both the letters seen by this correspondent issued on Saturday did not contain any detail about the package of the newly-appointed chairman-cum-MD of the state-owned electronic media.

A senior official in the Establishment Division, however, said according his unconfirmed information, the newly-appointed chairman of the PTV will be given percentage of the income that the state owned media channel will earn from the program of the new appointee.

Some senior officials in the state owned media consider it a violation of the rules as the salary package or remunerations should be mentioned in the appointment letter.

The previous chairman of the PTV, Pervaiz Rashid, during the second term of Nawaz Sharif, had refused to take any salary from the national exchequer.
