Mazhar Abbas highlights the government’s failures in press freedom, journalists’ safety
ISLAMABAD—Journalist Mazhar Abbas has termed the federal government’s record on ensuring journalists’ freedom of expression and safety as “one of the worst in recent years.”
In a tweet, he mentioned the murder of Arshad Sharif, the missing Imran Riaz Khan and the sedition charges, and the blanket ban on naming the former Prime Minister Imran Khan on TV channels as examples of the PDM government’s worst record.
“PDM Govt. track record as far as ensuring freedom of expression and safety of journalists one of the worst in recent years. From Arshad Sharif’s murder to Imran Riaz’s missing and now sedition charges besides the blanket ban on ex-PM, Imran Khan. Threat to one is a msg for others.”=
Recently, treason cases have been registered against journalists Shaheen Sehbai, Sabir Shakir, Moeed Pirzada, Wajahat S. Khan, and Ahmed Noorani.
