Man indicted for killing minor girl

KARACHI, July 23: An anti-terrorism court on Monday indicted accused Saleem Ahmed in a case of kidnapping, rape and killing of a minor girl on Feb 22, 2006 in the Rizvia Society police limits.

The accused pleaded “not guilty” and decided to go on trial.Judge Ghulam Ali A. Samtio of ATC-1, who is conducting the trial, fixed Aug 1 and asked Special Public Prosecutor Niamat Ali Randhawa to produce the prosecution witnesses before the court for recording their statements in the case.

According to the prosecution, the accused kidnapped a three-year-old girl identified as Maryam, daughter of Bashir Ahmed of Rizvia Society, in front of her residence on Feb 22, 2006.

The accused raped the child, who fainted and later died. He was throwing something wrapped in a piece of cloth into a sewer when a police constable and an area resident saw him and arrested him on suspicion.

He tried to convince the people who had gathered there that he had committed no crime.

He was, however, brought to the Rizvia Society police station, where he confessed to his crime.

The police informed the volunteers of the Edhi Welfare Trust and the body was retrieved from the sewerage line near the Gutter Baghicha.

Case transferred

The administrative judge of the Anti-Terrorism Courts, Abdul Ghafoor Memon, on Monday accepted the charge-sheets against three accused in a kidnapping-for-ransom case.

He transferred the case to the ATC-II for further trial.

Accused Gul Zameen along with absconding co-accused Sultan Malik, Sultan Zaib, Sabir, Zubair and Fahim are charged with kidnapping two-year-old Talha in Sherpao Colony, Landhi, on May 28, 2007 and demanding Rs300,000 as ransom for his release.

The child was shifted to Lower Swat. The kidnappers the boy after receiving the amount they had demanded.

Accused Gul Zameen was arrested on a tip-off on June 30 in the limits of the Ghaligi police station, Barikot Tehsil, Swat.

Police stated that during interrogation the accused admitted to committing the crime, but the co-accused were yet to be arrested.
