Majority reject discrimination against women

ISLAMABAD: Response to a media campaign based on interactive questions initiated by the Ministry of women Development recently shows that majority of the people rejected discrimination against women in education, property and marriage-related issues.

The campaign titled ‘Agahi Zaroori Hai’ was launched under the project of “Community campaign to prevent violence against women including media,” at a total cost of Rs.38 million.

The initiative that lasted for over two months, four questions were prepared that addressed the most common unjust behaviours prevalent in the society. These questions were then published in some of the leading Urdu language dailies besides being aired on Pakistan Television. The respondents were promised prizes through a lucky draw.

The question that received the most overwhelming response related to the right of property that asked: “Can a father or brother deprive women of their property rights?

The ministry received 300 responses through snail mail and as many as 600 via e-mails. Ninety eight per cent of those surveyed said ‘No’ while only 2 per cent gave this right to the male heads of the household.
