lT dept making efforts to generate employment: Sehgal

KARACHI, June 09 2006: The Advisor to Chief Minister for Environment, Alternate Energy and IT, Noman Sehgal has said that the IT Department was making all out efforts to generate employment opportunities in the province. Addressing a press conference here on May 8, he said that as many as 1600 posts would be filled as a result of IT projects in various departments. In addition, the private sector was likely to create another 6000 jobs in “IT and IT Enables Service” sector within a couple of months.

He said that the department had a vision to harness the potential of IT as a key contributor in the development of Sindh and Pakistan. This would lead to improving service delivery to the common man through use and application of IT, to facilitate and encourage private sector to play its role in promotion, development and use of IT. He said that Sindh IT Department was committed to facilitate development of quality human resource in every field and promote IT education from primary classes.

Giving the overview of the performance of department, Sehgal said that a number of projects were completed and many were in progress, that were expected to be completed soon. He referred to the installation of Local Area Network at the Governor’s House in this regard and added that exclusive bandwidth for internet access had been provided to Governor’s House through the NTC.

He further said that software for file tracking had been developed by the IT department, which would be first installed at the Chief Secretary’s office where quite a large number of files were being sent and received. With the help of this programme one can easily track any file and can have the record of file !Tom the starting location/date to the current status. This programme will be installed in all departments and the 400 IT Awareness Centers provincial govemment would priority of the department and added that as many as 40 centres would be operational within 15 days in various areas of the province.

Professional instructors would impart training to common people at these centres. Sehgal maintained that IT Education Department all districts that would be headed by Executive District officers (IT) and added that professionals from private sector would be hired on merit for these posts. This was advertised and scores of applications were received, which were being processed. Regarding e-government, he said that all components in this regard had already been completed while the development of software had been outsourced to a private software company after completing all formalities.

Speaking about the achievements of IT department, he said that the entire record of Civil Hospital Karachi would be computerized at a cost of Rs 10 million. The Rs60 million e-policing project was also under way and the tenders were being evaluated. The advisor said that Internet Media City was another plan of IT Department for which the private sectors was being encouraged to come forward and invest while the provincial land for this project.
He further said that IT Mela held in Karachi was a big success in and similar events would be held in other cities of the province. He, however, regretted the lack of cooperation on the part of other departments particularly the Education Department.

Noman Sehgal said that he was committed to revolutionise the system through efficient involvement of IT and was following the vision ‘IT for everyone’.
