Love marriage lands youth in trouble

JAMSHORO: A teenaged prisoner of the Khairpur Nathan Shah sub-jail, district Dadu, has allegedly been sodmised by four other inmates of the prison, The News learnt on Sunday.

Sixteen-year-old Asghar, s/o Ibrahim Kathio, disclosed the gory incident to a friend, who came to see him in the jail. Subsequently, a complaint was filed with the civil judge K N Shah, who constituted an inquiry committee led by the Mukhteyarkar to probe into the alleged gang-sodomy.

Reportedly, three days ago the Kakar police of K N Shah Taluka, district Dadu, arrested Asghar from Chhandan Mori and “recovered 95 grams of Hashish” from his possession. The police lodged the case against the teenager and sent him to the K N sub-jail after seeking a 14-day remand from the court.

Recently, Asghar’s friend Guhlam Ali Janwari visited the prison to see him. During the meeting the teenaged prisoner told his friend that he had been sodomised by four inmates of the prison.

Narrating the details of the gory incident, Asghar said that four dangerous prisoners of the jail tied his hands and legs and sodomised him for the entire night.

“When I cried out for help, the sodomites made me unconscious by forcibly giving me some intoxicants,” he alleged. “I tried to put up resistance, but the sodomites thrashed me badly,” he said, alleging that the jail staff witnessed the despicable drama but didn’t come to his rescue.

On the request of Asghar, his friend filed an application with the court of the civil judge K N Shah. The judge ordered the medical check-up of the victim prisoner by giving him temporary bail. The judge also constituted an inquiry team under the supervision of the Mukhteyarkar K N Shah and directed him to submit the report on Monday (today).

Meanwhile, the incharge sub-jail K N Shah Abdul, Qadir Hakro, denied the allegations, while the jailer, Hanief Khoso, said he was unaware of the incident.

After the court orders, the teenaged prisoner, Asghar, was taken to the Taluka Hospital K N Shah, where Dr Shamas Kalhoro performed his medical check-up.

Dr Kalhoro told newsmen that he had spotted some strange spots on the baggy trousers of the victim youth, which along with some other things have been sent to Karachi for further tests. However, he added that there were no signs of torture on the victim’s body.

Talking to newsmen at the hospital, Asghar said that he had contracted a love marriage with his cousin, Khudeja Kathio, on July 3, 2006. “Neither mine nor Khudeja’s parents were opposed to the marriage,” he said.

One day Khudeja’s cousin, Ramzan Kathio, called him to Khanpur and handed over me to the incharge of the Kakar police station, Bukhashal Soomro. He alleged that Soomro booked him in a concocted drugs case, showing me in possession of 95 grams of Hashish. He also narrated the whole gang-sodomy incident to newsmen.

Asghar said he was an orphan, as both his mother and father were dead. “Since I’ve nobody to look after me I’m being implicated in a fabricated case,” he claimed. Asghar also appealed to higher authorities to come to his help.

Interestingly, K N Shah falls in the constituency of Minster for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jatoi.

Meanwhile, prominent activists of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), including Prof Badar Soomro and Prof Mushtaqe Merani, expressed their concern over the gang-sodomy. They extended moral and legal support to the victim and said that a fact-finding committee would be constituted.
