Loss of heritage

Karachi: There were a lot of rumours about the historical belongings of Radio Pakistan being burnt after the fire broke out. There were also rumours that the table and chair used by Liaqat Ali Khan to first address the nation had fallen victim to the fire. The station’s Director, Iqbal Azam Faridi, confirmed that the table was not there at the time. “However, the cushion and the covers of the chair have burnt, but the wood is intact,” he answered.

Not many people know, however, that the three masterpieces of Quranic calligraphy done by Jimmy Engineer have also been burnt to the ground. Jimmy engineer donated these to studio five as his token of love for Radio Pakistan.

“There was a rare life-sized portrait of Quaid-e-Azam placed at the entry of one of the studios and that too was burnt in the fire. The historical piano which was used to compose the national anthem of Pakistan, however, is safe as it was sent to Lahore for repairs a few days before the fire,” he said.
