Licences to 12 new TV channels soon

ISLAMABAD – General Manager, Enforcement, Pakistan Electronic Media and Regulatory Authority (Pemra), Colonel Mansoor Rasheed (Retd) said on Saturday that the government will soon award 12 new licences for opening of TV channels.

Speaking in PTV programme “News Morning,” he said the process of awarding licence to 22 new channels is in pipeline, which hopefully would be completed soon. He said 10 licences have also been awarded to satellite TV channels.

Two licences have been awarded to virtual universities, which will air their transmissions soon, he said and added the government is keen to provide qualitative and clean entertainment programmes to the viewers.

In response to a question he said presently about 1,196 cable operators are operating legally. He said Pemra has taken action against 2,300 illegal cable operators. He said cable operators have been issued a list of channels, which was prepared in consultation with the public.

He said airing of CD and commercial programmes on cable network has been banned by the Pemra and action taken against 1,500 cable operators who violated the code of conduct.

Replying to a question he said that Pemra has also banned series of MM channels. He said if any one has any complaint about the cable operators they can call on universal access number 111-736-111 and added that people can also register their complaints on web site www. pemra.gov.pk
