Lecture on media, social change

Rawalpindi: The Department of Communication and Media Studies organised lecture regarding Media and Social Change at the Fatima Jinnah Women University here on Friday.

The aim of the lecture was to promote the knowledge and understanding of social change in Pakistan that is taking place through media. Social change is basically a structural transformation of political, social and economic systems and institutions to create a more equitable and just society. Since 1950s, in the countries that have reached a high level of industrialisation, the mass media of cinema, radio and TV have a key role in political power and social change.

Guest speaker Naeem Bukhari, Senior Advocate Supreme Court, said that communication is an art of conversation that is originated from history earlier times. Mass Communication does change and alter our life styles, attitudes, patterns and responses of our lives, he added.

Naeem Bukhari highlighted the glory of Muslims history, which promoted cultural change in which language, norms, books, dress, religion, traditions are included. These cultural aspects play important role in social change in which media is playing significant contribution in changing the mind sets of people and the societal system. We should utilise our media tools in positive way that can change the negative perception of people and could bring positive change in our society, he added.

Naeem Bukhari also talked about the patriarchal system in the light of Islamic perspective that Islam has given appropriate rights to women and gender equality should not be underestimated. In the present scenario, our society is male dominating in which males always take a woman as his own property, he said. In the framework of religiosity and spirituality, he also talked about society, which is not following Islamic traditions and culture as all societies have some set of norms and traditions, which they follow. A large number of students and faculty members of Departments of Communication and Media Studies attended the lecture.
