Lawyers threaten march on Karachi

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad lawyers on Friday threatened to stage a march on Karachi if Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) continued with their terror acts like Wednesday’s violence against lawyers in the port city.

“Karachi is not MQM’s property to which it may use as it likes. MQM will have stop disturbing the city’s peace and if this doesn’t happen, the lawyers will march on Karachi to take action against it,” Islamabad District Bar Association (IDBA) President Haroon-ur Rasheed told lawyers at the district courts. He, however, didn’t elaborate on the possible action.

Haroon alleged that a dictator, General Ziaul Haq, had created MQM and another, Pervez Musharraf, supported it to serve his personal ends. He declared MQM a fascist party, which extorted money from citizens at gunpoint. He said MQM chief Altaf Hussain should end self-exile and return home if he claimed to be a politician.

Rasheed announced funeral in absentia of lawyers killed in Karachi today (Saturday) at 1I:00am in F-8 Markaz and appealed to the civil society members and lawyers to turn up.

The lawyers earlier staged a demonstration at the district courts on the first day of the three-day mourning against Wednesday’s Karachi violence, which killed six lawyers including one woman. They shouted slogans against MQM and demanded public hanging of its workers involved in the lawyers’ killing in Karachi and took a round of the courts. They also accused the presidency of conspiring against the lawyers.
