Lawyers, journalists protest ban on Geo Super

RAWALPINDI: Lawyers, civil society, political and social organisations and persons of different schools of thought, while protesting the measures of so-called democratic government to shut down Geo Super, have strongly condemned such steps, saying that the leaders and rulers should clean their blotted faces instead of concealing them.

President District Bar Rawalpindi Malik Jawad Khalid, Secretary Sardar Manzir Bashir, former President Chaudhry Taufeeq Asif, Secretary Finance Supreme Court Bar Sanaullah Zahid, former President High Court Bar Sardar Asmatullah, former Joint Secretary District Bar Shahbaz Ahmed Rajput, former General Secretary Khurram Masood Kayani and other senior and junior lawyers Monday expressed their astonishment over prolonged ban on Geo Super. Protesting the ban, they said that by imposing restrictions on the Jang Group, especially Geo Super, the present government proved that, like army dictator, it was also in the habit of hearing all-is-well, and if anyone criticised or informed the masses of reality, would face the music.

Sardar Asmatullah said this step of the government was not only undemocratic, unconstitutional and illegal but also a symbol of extremism. Sardar Manzir Bashir said that Geo Super was the only channel to promote healthy society, and it fell prey to the stubbornness of the present government. He said his community assured full cooperation to the Jang Group.

Chaudhry Taufeeq Asif said that Geo Super was being victimised for speaking the truth. Geo Super was also the target of oppression during General Pervez Musharraf’s dictatorship, and now the present government was also playing the role of B team of Musharraf as its also does not like criticism against him.

Sanaullah Zahid said that the government, by attacking freedom of the Press, exposed its true face not only to the Pakistani nation but also to the whole world that what end those meet who speak against it.

In the same way persons belonging to different schools of thought termed the government steps an act of cowardice and demanded immediate restoration of Geo Super. Meanwhile, the closure of Geo Super was also condemned in Bagh, Azad Kashmir. The journalist organisations of District Press Club Bagh held a protest demonstration against the shutting down of Pakistan’s only sports channel of – Geo Super.

Chief Caretaker of Sajjad Shaheed Press Club Pervezul Hassan, President Zahid Gilani, Syed Tahir Hussain, Raja Javed Iqbal and other speakers demanded of the government to stop victimisation and should pay attention to solve problems of the masses.

Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami AJK Abdul Rasheed Turabi also addressed the protest rally and demanded restoration of Geo Super forthwith otherwise a protest campaign would be launched. Turabi said that the telecast of Geo Super were watched in the AJK and occupied Kashmir and its closure is extremely unfair with the sports lovers.
