Lashkar-i-Jhangvi linked to Pearl murder, bomb attacks

KARACHI- Police published photos of 10 militants wanted over the murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl and two deadly car bomb attacks on Western targets in Karachi.

At least five of the militants are believed to be from the banned outfit Lashkar-i-Jhangvi (LJ). It was the first time police had identified LJ as being behind all three attacks.

Printed under the banner ‘Most Wanted’, the photos of the 10 militants were carried in newspapers.

The black and white passport sized photos were accompanied by offers of financial rewards for help in nabbing them.

One of the photographed men, Asif Ramzi, is listed as wanted in the Pearl murder case and for sectarian killing, with a three million rupees reward offered for his capture.

Another suspect, Naveedul Hassan, is listed as wanted over the June 14 US consulate attack which killed 12 Pakistanis. His capture carries a two million rupees reward.

Sharib is listed as wanted over the both the consulate attack and the May 8 attack on a bus outside the Sheraton Hotel.

All three men are LJ activists, a senior police investigator said. The group has long been blamed for sectarian killings.

The photographs were published after interrogations of dozens of militants rounded up by police in the past week on suspicion of aiding al-Qaeda fugitives from Afghanistan in the attacks on foreigners.
