KU radio starts test transmission

The radio station of the Department of Mass Communication (MCD) of the University of Karachi (KU) worth four million rupees, with the frequency FM 90.6, started its proper test transmission early last week.

The station, titled the Karachi University Campus Radio FM 90.6, had conducted its inaugural test transmission on April 15, 2007. It took almost a year to complete the testing and calibration of the equipment, which suffered delays caused by other development work going on in the institute. However, now the test transmission, a one-hour transmission of news and other programmes is being aired from March 25, 2008.

The radio is being solely supervised by Professor Inam Bari Jafri of the Department of Mass Communication, while its content is being produced by the students. The one-hour transmission, daily from 3.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. includes an academic news bulletin, news reports, documentaries and profile interviews. The M.A. (Final) students are primarily producing the bulletin while the rest of the department is involved in making other programmes. Being a campus radio, it is non-commercial and its range is limited to 15 kilometres, thus restricting its listenership to a small portion of the city around the varsity.
