KP assembly passes bill to promote regional languages

Peshawar–Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Monday passed a bill to establish Regional Languages Authority for the purpose of teaching and promotion of regional languages in the province.

The bill titled as ‘Regional Languages Authority Act 2011’ was passed with some amendments proposed by MPA Saqibullah Khan Chamkani. Provincial Minister for Information, Mian Iftikhar Hussain tabled by draft bill in assembly.

“It is natural aspiration and desire of the people of the province to promote teaching and use of widely spoken regional languages in the province,” reads the bill. After passage of the bill, an Authority will be established with Minister for Elementary and Secondary Edcuation as Chairman. The authority will consider ways and means for promotion of regional languages and to make all necessary arrangements in this regard for teaching, promotion and use of regional languages.

The authority will also recommend to government a curriculum and syllabus for teaching of regional languages, spoken in the province. It will also arrange translation and publication of technical terms in science, home economics, humanities and commerce subjects and to promote use of regional languages through general publication and to undertake preparation and publication of dictionaries, encyclopedia.
