Kidnapped girl recovered after 7 years

Karachi: Nineteen-year-old Hina Sagheer Rao, who was abducted on April 24, 2002, was recovered on Tuesday by the Karachi police. The people who had kidnapped her seven years ago – a woman named Rabia alias Rubina and her son, Ashar – were also nabbed by the Liaquatabad police.

Rao had given birth to a son while in captivity, who was also recovered by the police.

Rao was kidnapped when she was a 12-year-old from the limits of the Liaquatabad Police Station. An FIR was registered, but her whereabouts remained unknown until she was recovered on Tuesday.

The girl told the police that she had been sexually assaulted, repeatedly, by various individuals, allegedly at the behest of Rabia and Ashar. She claimed that Rabia had forcibly wed her to her (Rabia’s) husband, Rashid. The latter, however, died around six months ago.

Rabia, who is in police custody, claimed that her husband had liked Hina and insisted, despite her (Rabia’s) reservations, that he wanted to abduct the 12-year-old. Further investigation is under way.
