KARACHI (December 04 2007): As a result of sudden stoppage of services by various pre-paid international calling cards service providers, customers across the country are facing huge losses running into millions of rupees on purchased cards which are not working since last several weeks.

Customers and calling card dealers still holding these cards in the hope that these may be revived. The dealers, however, are unaware about the sudden stoppage of services by these calling cards companies who have not given any plausible reason for this stoppage with any prior notice.

Some pre-paid calling card dealers attribute this problem to the policy of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Limited (PTCL) which has stopped their services through its network. PTCL, however when contacted, contradicted these allegations, saying that no such policy from the authority is being perused.

A regular calling card customer said that he had bought a card to talk to his family in US, but found that it was not working while the help-line customer facilitators did not respond to his problem and now the card of no use.

A calling cards dealer said the companies of those cards had already stopped selling them and dealers were now selling the stuff they had acquired previously before stoppage of services from these companies.

He said it was not yet confirmed whether the PTCL was responsible for this stoppage of service or those companies had packed up their businesses for reasons unannounced. “These companies give us a low margin for sale of calling cards while getting huge profit out them,” he added.
