Just shut up, Bilour tells TV anchors

SAHIWAL: Federal Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour has said television anchorpersons cannot make governments.

They continue dishing it out the whole day; they cast a slur on others’ character day in day out, and they give deadlines about toppling of the governments. “But they should shut their mouth now,” he warned TV anchorpersons while addressing a ceremony at the Sahiwal Railway Station, organised to inaugurate the Lodhran-Sahiwal double track.

Responding to journalists’ questions, the Awami National Party (ANP) central leader said journalists put up with the martial law governments even for up to 10 years, but they did not bear with a democratically-elected government only for two years. “They launch a propaganda campaign against a democratic government in just two, three years to topple it,” he added. But now their (anchorpersons’) smear campaign would not be able to overthrow the incumbent government, and it would complete its five years tenure, the ANP leader said.

When the journalists were leaving his press function in protest against his remarks, Bilour said the TV anchorpersons were part of anti-democratic forces, and they might boycott his press conference if they wanted so. He said if the anchorpersons had any doubts about their popularity, they should assess themselves by contesting the elections.

Earlier, Railways General Manager Saeed Akhtar informed the participants that the Lodhran-Sahiwal double track project had been completed despite economic crunch, and work on the Sahiwal-Lahore double track would be started soon.
