Journalists protest media curbs

ISLAMABAD: Over 500 journalists from Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Saturday condemned the chaining of media by the government and vowed to get back their right to responsible and objective journalism.

Wearing black armbands, they observed Saturday as black day and staged a sit-in in front of the offices of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and a private TV channel. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson Benazir Bhutto, lawyers, students and civil society representatives also joined them to press the government to take back the ordinance promulgated to gag the press.

Bhutto expressed her solidarity with the media and assured her and her party’s full support to the journalists to strengthen their struggle. Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists President Huma Ali, Secretary General Mazhar Abbas and Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club President Mushtaq Minhas delivered speeches on the occasion. staff report
